José Mourinho Eyeing Premier League Return Amid Tensions in Turkey

Fenerbahçe boss expresses dissatisfaction and keeps close watch on Newcastle United’s situation

José Mourinho is reportedly considering a surprise return to the Premier League, despite his recent high-profile move to Turkish club Fenerbahçe. The legendary manager, who signed a €10.5 million-per-year contract with the Istanbul club in June, has voiced frustrations about Turkish football, including alleged favoritism toward title rivals Galatasaray.

In a candid interview last week, Mourinho expressed disappointment with the Turkish league, even claiming “nobody abroad wants to watch” it. This dissatisfaction has reportedly reignited Mourinho’s interest in English football, where he spent years managing clubs such as Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham.

According to The Guardian, Mourinho sees Newcastle United as a prime target for a Premier League comeback, sensing “unfinished business” in England. He has reportedly instructed intermediaries to keep him updated on any developments at the club, especially regarding the future of current manager Eddie Howe.

Mourinho’s connection with Newcastle’s leadership runs deeper; he was seen socializing with Newcastle chairman Yasir al-Rumayyan during the Formula One Grand Prix in Saudi Arabia last March, around the time he was between jobs.

Despite a shaky start to the season that saw Newcastle go five games without a win, Howe recently relieved some pressure with significant victories over Chelsea and Arsenal. However, his long-term position may still be under review. Newcastle’s ambitious ownership is eager for Champions League contention, especially after a seventh-place finish last season.

Howe has also faced challenges in managing within the limits of Premier League spending regulations (PSR), which has strained his relationship with the new leadership, including sporting director Paul Mitchell, who joined in July. With key supporters Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi now out of Newcastle’s board, Howe’s position appears less secure, and Mourinho is watching closely, ready to seize any potential opportunity.
