Jose Mourinho, the outspoken Fenerbahce manager, sparked both amusement and controversy during a post-match press conference after his team’s 3-1 home defeat to Rangers in the UEFA Europa League. The Portuguese coach, known for his theatrics, pretended to fall asleep as a journalist’s lengthy question dragged on for nearly 45 seconds.
The match, which saw Fenerbahce struggle against their Scottish opponents, left Mourinho visibly frustrated. After the game, he deflected blame for the loss, stating, “It’s not my fault,” if his players had underestimated Rangers. However, it was his antics during the press conference that stole the spotlight.
As one journalist began a long-winded question, Mourinho was seen puffing his cheeks, rolling his eyes, and eventually closing his eyes as if nodding off. The question, which took an unusually long time to reach its conclusion, was finally translated to Mourinho as a query about his defensive player selections.
The manager, clearly drained from the evening’s events, responded with a mix of exasperation and humor. “This is too much,” he initially replied, before adding, “I’m tired, man. Ninety minutes, not to listen to all of this. Too tired for that.”
Mourinho’s candid reaction highlighted the emotional toll of the match, as well as his trademark no-nonsense approach to media interactions. Fenerbahce will now turn their attention to the return leg at Ibrox next Thursday, where Mourinho will hope to rally his team and keep their Europa League hopes alive.
