Erik Ten Hag boosted by comeback win against Brentford ahead of showdown with Mourinho’s Fenerbahce.
Jose Mourinho could add to Manchester United’s struggles this week as his Fenerbahce side host the Red Devils in Thursday’s Europa League match. However, United manager Erik Ten Hag has been given a much-needed lift following his team’s dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Brentford last weekend, which helped ease speculation surrounding his future at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag, who described Mourinho as “an example” for managers, acknowledged the significance of the upcoming clash. “It’s a big game for both of us,” said Ten Hag, speaking in good spirits after receiving an award from the Football Writers’ Association for last season’s FA Cup win. Mourinho, now managing Fenerbahce, has led his team to fourth place in the Turkish Super Lig, despite a recent defeat to rivals Galatasaray. The Portuguese manager’s side has picked up four points from their opening two European games.
Manchester United’s recent win has also seen Rasmus Højlund emerge as a key figure. The Danish striker scored a crucial goal in the comeback against Brentford, crediting assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy for helping improve his finishing. Højlund praised the legendary Dutch forward’s influence, saying his advice played a pivotal role in the striker’s second goal of the season, a well-executed chip that turned the game around after Alejandro Garnacho’s equalizer.
Despite the boost in morale, football pundit Alan Shearer has warned Ten Hag that the pressure remains on. Speaking on “The Rest is Football” podcast, Shearer emphasized that Manchester United’s results must continue to improve or the scrutiny on the manager will intensify. “They did really well yesterday, but you’ve got to keep that up,” Shearer cautioned.
As the stage is set for Thursday’s clash, both Mourinho and Ten Hag face pivotal moments in their respective seasons, with Manchester United needing to build on their recent success to avoid further scrutiny.
