Jose Mourinho Terminates Fenerbahce Winger’s Contract Days Before Manchester United Clash

Ryan Kent’s time in Istanbul comes to an abrupt end as Fenerbahce prepare for Europa League showdown with Mourinho’s former club.

Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho has made a bold move by terminating the contract of winger Ryan Kent, just days before the club’s crucial Europa League clash against Manchester United. The decision comes after Kent spent just 16 months with the Turkish Super Lig side, having joined from Rangers in 2023.

Mourinho, appointed as Fenerbahce boss in June, quickly reshaped the squad by bringing in high-profile signings, including Allan Saint-Maximin, Filip Kostic, Sofyan Amrabat, and veteran striker Cenk Tosun. The club currently sits fourth in the league with 16 points from seven matches.

However, Kent, a former Liverpool academy graduate, struggled to make an impact. Despite signing a four-year deal, the 27-year-old managed only 18 appearances last season under former manager Ismail Kartal and was subsequently dropped from the squad in February. Mourinho, who gave Kent just one start in a Champions League qualifier, reportedly grew frustrated with the winger’s refusal to leave despite interest from other clubs.

Fenerbahce confirmed the contract termination in a brief statement: “The contract with Ryan Kent, one of the Professional Football A Team players, has been terminated by mutual agreement. We present it to the public.”

Reports had linked Kent to clubs in England, Italy, and Saudi Arabia, but a move never materialized. Leeds United, in particular, had been long-term admirers of Kent, who enjoyed his best form under Steven Gerrard at Rangers.

Fenerbahce’s next challenge will be against Mourinho’s former club, Manchester United, at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium, but they will do so without Kent, whose future now remains uncertain.
