Former Liverpool Manager Content in Advisory Role as Arbeloa Steps In Amidst Bernabéu Uncertainty
Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has firmly removed himself from speculation linking him to the vacant Real Madrid coaching position, while expressing sympathy for the departed Xabi Alonso.
Klopp’s name resurfaced after Madrid’s surprising decision to dismiss Alonso just six months into his tenure. However, speaking to Servus TV, Klopp was unequivocal. “I’m going to anticipate your question,” he stated, “but I can say that the links have nothing to do with me, and do not affect me in any way.”
The German, who now serves as Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull, appears settled in his advisory role and shows no desire to return to the pressures of day-to-day management. “Coaching positions are always changing,” he reflected. “It’s fine to watch from the sidelines… where I am now is the right place for me.”
His comments extended beyond his own future to a pointed assessment of the situation at Madrid, suggesting deeper issues at the club. Klopp voiced concern over the handling of Alonso’s brief reign, noting the difficulty of following a legend like Carlo Ancelotti.
“It’s a sign that not everything is 100% right there if Xabi Alonso… has to leave just six months later,” Klopp said. “I truly feel sorry for him, because I think he’s a great coach.”
For now, the helm has been passed to former Madrid defender Álvaro Arbeloa on an interim basis. Arbeloa, who admits he is an admirer of Klopp’s methods, could not confirm if his role would become permanent, leaving the long-term position a topic of intense speculation heading into the summer.
While Klopp retains admirers within the Madrid hierarchy, his clear stance and critique of the club’s environment suggest the Bernabéu hot seat will be filled by someone else.
