Kylian Mbappe Set to Become Majority Shareholder of SM Caen

Real Madrid Star Makes Significant Investment in Ligue 2 Club

Kylian Mbappe, having recently joined Real Madrid following the expiration of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain, is already making moves to re-engage with French domestic football. The 25-year-old superstar is poised to become the majority shareholder of Ligue 2 side SM Caen.

According to Ouest France and MD, Mbappe will invest nearly €20 million to acquire an 80% stake from American investment group Oaktree. The remaining 20% will continue to be held by Pierre Antoine Capton, the current administrative president. Part of Mbappe’s investment will be used to address the club’s existing debt.

Ziad Hammoud, head of Mbappe’s brand image team, is expected to be installed as the new president by Mbappe and his mother, Fayza Lamari. Interestingly, Lamari had previously considered moving Mbappe to Caen several years ago, before ultimately deciding on AS Monaco.

Mbappe’s investment in Caen marks a notable expansion of his brand, reminiscent of David Beckham’s move to buy a club. It is rare for a player to take over a club while still active in their playing career. Though Mbappe may not be involved in the day-to-day operations, his investment underscores the significant financial disparity between football’s elite and the lower tiers of the sport.
