The agents of Villarreal defender Pau Torres will fly to England this week to negotiate terms on a potential summer transfer to Man Utd, according to reports.
Torres has been in great form for his hometown club this season, playing 47 times in all competitions as Villarreal finished seventh in La Liga and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.
He caught the eye last season too as the Yellow Submarine won the Europa League under Unai Emery with Tottenham, Man Utd, Man City, Real Madrid and Barcelona all linked with him at various points.
Torres is understood to have rejected a move to Tottenham last summer as he wanted to taste Champions League football with Villarreal, where he came through the youth ranks.
But now El Periodico Mediterraneo insist that Man Utd are looking to take a lead in the race with the Red Devils his potential ‘future destiny’.
Torres now thinks it’s ‘the time has come to take a step forward in his career’ with Villarreal said to be willing to let him go for €50m (£43m) despite a €60m (£51m) release clause in his contract.
And the Spain international’s two agents ‘plan to travel to Manchester this week to negotiate the conditions of his contract’ as Man Utd and Villarreal attempt to settle on a fee.
Man Utd are ‘willing to pay’ €50m (£43m) with a transfer to Old Trafford now seen as his ‘next step’ and the report adds that the Red Devils have been following him ‘closely for some time’.
The new permanent Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag will have money to spend this summer with one report insisting that his transfer budget will be between £100m and £150m.
And in a rare interview, Man Utd owner Avram Glazer has said the Red Devils will back Ten Hag after a “disappointing season” that saw them finish sixth in the Premier League.
“I don’t think this is now the time to talk about it,” Glazer said on Sky News. “It is a disappointing season, it’s a disappointing season for everyone and we’re going to work hard to make next season a better one.”
Pushed on his thoughts on Ten Hag and if they will back him with money to spend, Glazer added: “That’s why we hired him and he’s going to do a great job. We’ve always spent the money necessary to buy new players.”
