Lagos Court Orders VeryDarkMan to Pay N500 Million for Defaming Femi Falana and Falz

Social media critic instructed to remove false claims linking Falana family to Bobrisky.

The Lagos State High Court has ruled that social media critic Martin Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, must remove defamatory comments and videos targeting renowned lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) and his son, Folarin Falana (Falz). The court also imposed a N500 million fine for libel.

Justice M. O. Idowu delivered the verdict on Tuesday in suit no: ID/8584/GCM/2024, which addressed defamatory remarks and videos posted by VeryDarkMan on September 24, 2024. The social media critic had falsely linked the Falana family to controversial internet personality Bobrisky, known for his outspoken views on gender and LGBTQ+ issues in Nigeria.

The court found that VeryDarkMan’s statements were false and intended to damage the public image of Femi Falana and his son. Justice Idowu stated that the defamatory content continued to cause harm as long as it remained on social media and ordered its immediate removal.

Femi Falana, a respected human rights lawyer, and his son Falz, a well-known rapper and activist, took legal action after feeling their reputations had been maliciously tarnished. The court ruled in their favor, concluding that the claims were baseless and made with the intent to defame.
