Lagos Issues Urgent Flood Relocation Warning for Lekki, Ikorodu, Ajegunle Residents

State Government Urges Coastal Communities to Move to Higher Ground as Heavy Rains Loom

The Lagos State Government has called on residents in flood-prone areas—including parts of Lekki, Ikorodu, and Ajegunle—to immediately relocate to safer locations, anticipating severe flooding in the coming days.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, sounded the alarm during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday. He singled out vulnerable zones such as Ajilete in Ajegunle, Majidu in Ikorodu, and sections of the Lekki corridor, advising occupants to evacuate before conditions worsen.

“Residents around the Ajilete axis in Ajegunle must move. Those along the Ikorodu coastline, particularly Majidu, should also relocate. Some areas in Lekki are at risk too—though not all,” Wahab stressed. He assured that neighborhoods like Epe, Mushin, and Ikeja remain safe but urged vigilance in flood-prone zones such as Isheri’s OPIC axis.

The warning follows torrential downpours between Sunday night and Monday that submerged roads, homes, and businesses across Lagos. Distressing footage circulating online showed stranded vehicles, waterlogged streets, and disrupted daily life in affected communities.

Wahab attributed the heightened flood risk to Lagos’ coastal geography and worsening climate patterns, referencing NiMet’s 2025 forecast predicting heavier rainfall than usual. “Residents in low-lying areas must temporarily relocate upland until the rains subside,” he emphasized.

Despite the grim outlook, the commissioner sought to reassure Lagosians, highlighting ongoing efforts to unclog drains and widen flood channels. The government’s plea underscores a race against time to prevent a repeat of past flood disasters—but for many, the message is clear: move now, or risk being swept into crisis.
