Lampard Could Return to Manage Chelsea for a Third Time, Says Gallas

Former Teammate Points to Current Coventry Success as Pathway Back to Stamford Bridge

Frank Lampard could one day manage Chelsea for a third time, according to his former teammate William Gallas, as the club legend continues to rebuild his reputation with a stunning season at Coventry City.

Lampard, 46, is currently focused on leading Coventry back to the Premier League for the first time since 2001, with the Sky Blues sitting eight points clear at the top of the Championship. His success in the Midlands—set to be backed by the club in the January transfer window—stands in stark contrast to the turbulence at his former club, which parted ways with Enzo Maresca on New Year’s Day.

“I hope he continues doing well with Coventry, and one day, we could see him at Chelsea again,” Gallas said in an interview last March. “But right now, the best thing for him is to get them to the Premier League. That will be the best story for him.”

Lampard’s previous stints at Chelsea were mixed. His first tenure saw him secure Champions League football while promoting academy talents like Reece James and Mason Mount, but he was replaced by Thomas Tuchel the following season. A caretaker return in 2023 yielded just one win in 11 games, leaving his managerial legacy at Stamford Bridge under a cloud.

Now, with Chelsea searching for a new permanent manager—with Liam Rosenior, Oliver Glasner, and Andoni Iraola among the favorites—Lampard is considered an outsider for the role. Yet Gallas believes another reunion down the line shouldn’t be ruled out.

“Maybe helping another Premier League team into Europe would give him more experience,” Gallas added, “and then one day, we could see him at Chelsea again.”

For now, Lampard’s sights are set on completing Coventry’s remarkable promotion push. But as Chelsea turn another page, the door to a future emotional return for one of their greatest icons appears to remain slightly ajar.
