Barcelona stay three points clear of Real Madrid ahead of El Clasico with a dominant win.
Red-hot Robert Lewandowski and Pablo Torre each scored twice as Barcelona thrashed Sevilla 5-1 on Sunday, keeping them three points ahead of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga. The victory comes just a week before the highly anticipated Clasico against their Madrid rivals.
Barcelona’s commanding performance restored their lead after Real Madrid had briefly drawn level on points following their win against Celta Vigo on Saturday. Veteran striker Lewandowski opened the scoring with a penalty and added another before halftime, bringing his tally to 12 goals in 10 La Liga matches.
Pedri added Barcelona’s second with a precise strike from the edge of the box, while substitute Pablo Torre scored twice late on, including a fortuitous free-kick that found the net. Sevilla’s Stanis Idumbo netted a consolation goal, but it was far from enough to disrupt Barcelona’s dominance.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick praised his side’s performance and celebrated Gavi’s return to action after a long injury layoff. “It’s difficult to pick a highlight,” said Flick. “We’re all happy that Gavi is back.”
The win solidifies Barcelona’s position at the top of La Liga as they prepare for tough upcoming fixtures, including a Champions League clash with Bayern Munich and a visit to the Santiago Bernabeu for El Clasico.
