Club optimistic over record contract as focus shifts to summer transfer window
Liverpool have received a significant boost in their efforts to secure Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future at Anfield after reports from Spain confirmed that Real Madrid have ruled out making a January move for the England international. However, this development also casts doubt on Liverpool’s hopes of signing Real’s Aurelien Tchouameni, as the Spanish giants intend to keep the French midfielder for now.
Real Madrid End January Pursuit of Alexander-Arnold
Alexander-Arnold, whose current contract with Liverpool expires at the end of the season, has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, who have reportedly identified the 33-cap England star as a key transfer target. Speculation had grown in recent weeks that Real could fast-track their plans to sign him in January, especially after season-ending injuries to Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao left their defense depleted.
According to Relevo, however, Real Madrid have decided against pursuing any signings in the winter window, effectively shelving their plans to lure Alexander-Arnold to the Bernabeu until summer 2025. Manager Carlo Ancelotti reportedly views a January transfer as unrealistic and is prioritizing internal solutions for defensive cover.
Impact on Tchouameni Transfer Talks
Real Madrid’s decision also impacts Liverpool’s reported interest in Aurelien Tchouameni. Earlier speculation suggested that Real might be open to including the French midfielder in a player-plus-cash deal for Alexander-Arnold. However, with Ancelotti now relying on Tchouameni to potentially fill defensive roles, the midfielder is unlikely to be made available in the near future.
Liverpool Confident in Contract Renewal
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Alexander-Arnold’s future, Liverpool remain optimistic about securing a contract extension. Reports indicate that negotiations have reached a breakthrough, with the club offering the 25-year-old a record-breaking deal for an English player in the Premier League.
Club owners Fenway Sports Group are said to be increasingly confident Alexander-Arnold will commit to staying at Anfield, citing the player’s emotional connection to the club and desire to win more trophies as driving factors.
Speaking earlier this season, Alexander-Arnold reiterated his commitment to Liverpool at least for the current campaign. “I have always said I want to captain the club. That is a goal of mine. I want to be a Liverpool player this season (at a minimum),” he stated.
He also emphasized his ambition for silverware: “The most important thing is always trophies. We were close to the title last season, and we got a cup. This season we are looking really good… We are looking to win as many trophies as we can.”
Summer Window Awaits
While Real Madrid remain keen on pursuing Alexander-Arnold in the summer, journalist Graeme Bailey has reported that Liverpool are increasingly confident of retaining their star player long-term. An official announcement regarding his new contract could be on the horizon, securing the future of one of the Premier League’s most influential players.
For now, Liverpool can breathe a sigh of relief as January approaches without the looming threat of a Real Madrid raid, allowing the Reds to focus on maintaining their strong start to the season.
