Bournemouth Star’s Former Coach Confirms Reds’ Interest as Player Eyes “Next Step”
Liverpool’s hopes of securing one of their top summer transfer targets have received a significant boost after the player’s former coach revealed that a move to Anfield is well within reach. Milos Kerkez, the highly-rated Bournemouth left-back, has been identified as a key target for Arne Slot’s side, with recent comments from both the player and his former mentor fueling optimism that a deal could be finalized in the coming months.
The Merseyside club is enjoying a dream debut season under Slot, sitting comfortably at the top of the Premier League table with an 11-point lead. A win against Newcastle on Wednesday, coupled with a potential slip-up from Arsenal, could extend their advantage to a commanding 14 points. Liverpool’s impressive form has also seen them reach the Carabao Cup final, where they will face Newcastle on March 16, and advance to the Champions League last 16, where they will take on Paris Saint-Germain.
Despite their success, Slot has made just one signing since taking charge—Italian winger Federico Chiesa, who has seen limited playing time. However, the Reds are preparing for a transformative summer, with reports suggesting they will have a £200 million transfer budget to strengthen their squad. Kerkez, valued at £40 million, is poised to become the first major signing of the Slot era.
Richard Henczi, Kerkez’s former coach at Hungarian club Gyor, believes the 21-year-old is ready to make the leap to a top-tier club like Liverpool. “I think he’s ready to go to a higher-level club [than Bournemouth],” Henczi told Anfield Watch. “If he wants to go to Liverpool, he will go to Liverpool.”
Henczi, who worked with Kerkez during his formative years, praised the young defender’s potential, suggesting he has the talent to become one of the world’s best left-backs. “He has everything [to be one of the best]. I think he can’t be in the top five left-backs around the world if he plays at a smaller club. It depends on his next transfer—how many minutes will he play, and how well will he play? If he gets the chance, I think he has everything to be in the top five or 10 left-backs in the world.”
Kerkez has been a standout performer for Bournemouth this season, helping the Cherries push for what could be their first-ever European qualification. However, the allure of joining a club like Liverpool, where he could reunite with international teammate Dominik Szoboszlai, may prove too tempting to resist.
While Kerkez has expressed his commitment to Bournemouth’s current campaign, he hasn’t ruled out a future move. “It wouldn’t look bad [working with Szoboszlai at Liverpool], that’s for sure,” he said. “But it’s too early to talk about something like that. I have big goals with Bournemouth, we still have a lot of games to win, that’s the most important thing right now.”
With Liverpool’s ambitious summer plans taking shape, Kerkez’s potential arrival could be the first of several high-profile signings as Slot looks to build a squad capable of dominating both domestically and in Europe. For now, the Reds remain focused on their pursuit of silverware, but the prospect of adding one of Europe’s most promising young defenders has given fans plenty to look forward to.
