Reds Prepare €50m Bid for Uruguayan Defender Amid Fierce Competition for Palace Star
Liverpool are reportedly preparing a €50 million offer for Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo, as their plans to sign long-term target Marc Guehi on a free transfer face a major complication: fierce competition from Chelsea and other European giants.
The news comes after a whirlwind summer at Anfield that saw the board fully back new manager Arne Slot—who sensationally won the Premier League in his first season—with eight new signings, including headline arrivals Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz.
The club’s only significant setback was a failed last-minute move for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi on deadline day. Rather than re-enter negotiations in January, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed the club’s current strategy is to wait and compete for the England international on a free transfer next summer.
However, that plan is now fraught with risk. Romano warns that “several clubs from England, Italy, Spain, and Germany” are expected to enter the race, setting the stage for a major bidding war for Guehi’s signature.
Compounding the issue for Liverpool is the specific threat of competition from Chelsea. Reports indicate the Blues are making a strong push to lure Guehi back to his former club, hoping to sell him on an attractive sporting project and a return to Champions League football. The final decision is said to rest entirely with the player, who will have to choose between a emotional return to Chelsea, joining the storied tradition of Liverpool, or even accepting a starring role at a club like Real Madrid.
In response to this heightened competition, Liverpool appear to be activating a backup plan. The club has long monitored Ronald Araujo and is now prepared to make a concrete move. The belief is that the Uruguayan defender’s recurring injury issues have lowered his valuation, making a €50 million offer a strategic and potentially shrewd piece of business to reinforce Slot’s defence.
