Liverpool Fear Delayed Pursuit of Florian Wirtz as Leverkusen Hold Firm

Reds Optimistic but Cautious Amid Reports of Potential 2026 Wait for German Star

Liverpool’s hopes of securing Bayer Leverkusen’s rising star Florian Wirtz this summer may face an unexpected delay, with club officials reportedly concerned they could be forced to wait until 2026 to land their top target.

The Reds, under new manager Arne Slot, have been aggressive in the transfer market, already confirming the signing of Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong after Real Madrid agreed to a deal for Trent Alexander-Arnold. Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez is also said to have agreed personal terms, but it’s Wirtz who remains Liverpool’s marquee priority.

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that negotiations between the two clubs are progressing positively, with Wirtz himself expressing his desire to join Liverpool. However, despite the player’s preference, Leverkusen’s firm stance has introduced an element of doubt.

Liverpool have already tabled two substantial bids—reportedly exceeding €100m initially, followed by an improved offer reaching up to €130m. Yet, as former CBS journalist Ben Jacobs notes, the memory of last summer’s failed pursuit of Martin Zubimendi has left Liverpool’s hierarchy wary.

“There’s a realistic chance this gets done early in June,” Jacobs explained, “but Liverpool are cautious. Leverkusen aren’t just going to roll over—they’ll demand a significant fee, and there’s still a chance Wirtz stays another year and moves in 2026 instead.”

With talks ongoing, Liverpool fans remain hopeful—but the club is bracing for a potential twist in their pursuit of one of Europe’s most exciting young talents.
