French midfielder’s past comments hint at possible move to Anfield as Liverpool looks to bolster their squad in January.
Liverpool has reportedly reignited their interest in Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, with Spanish outlet Fichajes claiming the club has submitted a £41 million bid for the French international during the January transfer window.
The Reds are looking to strengthen their midfield, and Tchouameni could provide crucial competition in the defensive role. This move comes after Liverpool’s summer transfer plans saw limited activity, with only two permanent signings: Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who remains on loan at Valencia, and Italian winger Federico Chiesa, whose early promise was curtailed by injury.
Liverpool’s Midfield Rebuild
Despite their initial search for a new defensive midfielder, Liverpool opted to convert Ryan Gravenberch into a key player in that position after Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi declined a move to Anfield. Gravenberch has rewarded manager Arne Slot’s faith with consistent performances, but Liverpool appears intent on adding depth and competition to the role.
Tchouameni, a 23-year-old standout for Real Madrid and the French national team, could be the solution. The midfielder was previously linked with Liverpool in 2022, but he chose Real Madrid in a deal worth €80 million, rising to €100 million with add-ons.
Tchouameni’s Admiration for Liverpool
Although Tchouameni chose Real Madrid over Liverpool in the past, his previous comments suggest he holds the Merseyside club in high regard. Speaking to CNN during his time at Monaco, Tchouameni expressed admiration for both Real Madrid and Liverpool, saying, “I like both. I can watch Spanish games and English games. It’s different to play in Spain and it’s different to play in England. But at the end, for me, it’s just a matter of adaptation.”
He added: “I’m an ambitious person. Every time I do something, I just want to win.”
These remarks hint that Liverpool’s renewed pursuit of the midfielder may yield a different outcome this time.

The reported bid underscores Liverpool’s ambition to maintain momentum in the Premier League and their pursuit of silverware. Adding Tchouameni to the squad would not only enhance depth but also bring versatility and high-caliber talent to the midfield.
