Liverpool Secure Hugo Ekitike in £69m Deal as Summer Spending Soars

French Striker Joins Reds After Stellar Bundesliga Season, Bolstering Attack Post-Jota Tragedy

Liverpool have completed the signing of French striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt in a £69 million deal, with potential add-ons pushing the total fee to £79 million. The 23-year-old, one of Europe’s most sought-after forwards, has passed his medical and will soon link up with the squad on their pre-season tour in Hong Kong.

Why Ekitike?

The Reds turned their attention to Ekitike after Newcastle refused to sell Alexander Isak, who was valued at a staggering £150 million. Despite competition from Manchester United and Newcastle, Liverpool moved swiftly to secure the France U-21 international, who netted 22 goals in 48 appearances for Frankfurt last season.

Ekitike’s arrival comes at a crucial time for Liverpool, who are rebuilding their attack following the tragic death of Diogo Jota in a car crash earlier this summer. The club is also open to offers for Darwin Núñez, while Luis Díaz has attracted interest from Bayern Munich.

A Career on the Rise

Ekitike began his career at Reims before a brief loan spell in Denmark and a high-profile move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2022. Though he struggled for minutes alongside Messi, Mbappé, and Neymar, he still claimed a Ligue 1 winner’s medal. A loan to Frankfurt revived his career, earning him a spot in the Bundesliga Team of the Season last term.

“Hugo has improved tremendously and has been a real asset to our team,” said Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krosche“He’s earned this next step through his performances.”

Liverpool’s Summer Splurge Continues

Ekitike becomes Liverpool’s latest marquee signing, following the £116 million capture of Florian Wirtz, along with defenders Jérémie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez. Goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili also joined from Valencia, taking the club’s summer spending beyond £250 million as new manager Arne Slot reshapes the squad.

With Ekitike now in the fold, Liverpool fans will hope the young striker can hit the ground running—starting with their upcoming friendlies against Arsenal (July 31) and Manchester United (August 3).
