Isak Scores Then Succumbs to Injury as Reds Claim Nervy Victory
Liverpool climbed to fifth in the Premier League on Saturday, but their 2-1 win over Tottenham was anything but straightforward, requiring them to survive a late surge despite facing nine men for much of the second half at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
A tense and fragmented first half erupted into controversy just after the half-hour mark. Tottenham midfielder Xavi Simons saw his initial yellow card for a heavy challenge on Virgil van Dijk upgraded to a red after a VAR review, leaving the hosts with a mountain to climb.
Liverpool eventually broke the deadlock in the 56th minute. Substitute Alexander Isak, who had just entered the fray, finished coolly from Florian Wirtz’s pass to give the visitors the lead. The joy was tempered immediately, however, as the Swedish striker was forced off with an injury sustained while scoring.

The Reds doubled their advantage soon after. Hugo Ekitike, in blistering form, rose to power in a superb header for his fifth goal in three league games, seemingly putting the contest to bed.
Spurs refused to roll over. Substitute Richarlison ignited home hopes with a close-range finish with ten minutes remaining, setting up a frantic finale. The drama peaked in stoppage time when Tottenham defender Cristian Romero received a second yellow card, reducing his side to nine men, but Liverpool held on through six tense minutes of added time to secure the points.
The result extends Liverpool’s unbeaten run to six matches under manager Arne Slot, lifting them level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea. For a struggling Tottenham, this seventh league defeat leaves them languishing in 13th place, with a tough trip to Crystal Palace awaiting next.
Liverpool, now looking upward, will host Wolves on Saturday aiming to build on a victory that was ultimately more gritty than glamorous.
