Manager reveals disappointment over collapsed Guéhi deal, praises attitude of omitted star Chiesa
New Liverpool manager Arne Slot has asked for patience from fans as the club’s record signing, Alexander Isak, will be gradually introduced to the side following his monumental £125 million move from Newcastle.
With the Swedish striker having missed a full preseason and months of team training, Slot confirmed that a cautious approach is necessary to build up his fitness, meaning Isak is unlikely to play full 90-minute matches in the immediate future.

“We have to build him up gradually,” Slot stated. “We’ve signed him for six years, not just for the upcoming two weeks. If fans see me take him off, it’s all for his long-term fitness.”
In a press conference, Slot also expressed his disappointment over a transfer that got away, confirming that the club came “close” to signing defender Marc Guéhi from Crystal Palace in a £35 million deadline-day deal that ultimately collapsed. He described the failed move as a “pity” for both the player and Liverpool, leaving the door open for a future attempt.
Additionally, Slot praised the professional attitude of winger Federico Chiesa, who was left out of Liverpool’s Champions League squad. Despite his disappointment, Slot noted that Chiesa has responded by working “really hard” to be ready for domestic competitions.
