Reds’ Defensive Errors Prove Costly as Slot Backs Out-of-Form Star to Bounce Back
Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes suffered a setback as they fell to a frustrating 3-2 defeat against Fulham at Craven Cottage, with Mohamed Salah’s recent goal drought stretching to four games.
Despite a stunning long-range strike from Alexis Mac Allister giving the Reds an early lead, defensive lapses proved costly as Fulham struck three times in a chaotic 14-minute spell before halftime. Ryan Sessegnon capitalized on a poor clearance to level, before Andy Robertson’s errant pass gifted Alex Iwobi a goal. Rodrigo Muniz then outmuscled Virgil van Dijk to extend Fulham’s lead, leaving Liverpool shell-shocked.
A late Luis Diaz goal set up a tense finale, but the visitors couldn’t complete the comeback, with Harvey Elliott hitting the crossbar in stoppage time. The defeat—Liverpool’s first away league loss this season—means they missed the chance to go 14 points clear of Arsenal, who drew with Everton a day earlier.
All eyes, however, remain on Salah, who has now gone four games without a goal or assist—a rare dry spell for the Egyptian, who has 32 goals this season. Manager Arne Slot, however, remains confident his star man will rediscover his form.
“Maybe he should see it as a compliment,” Slot told BBC Sport. “His numbers were not normal when he was scoring. Mo knows what kind of player he is—he’ll show up again. I don’t worry about that.”
The Dutchman was less forgiving of his team’s defensive errors, admitting: “Conceding three goals like that is not Liverpool’s standard. We created chances late on, but we ran out of time to fix our first-half mistakes.”
With the title race still in their hands, Liverpool must regroup quickly—starting with Salah finding his scoring boots again. For Fulham, the victory keeps European dreams alive, proving once more that no lead is safe against Marco Silva’s spirited side.
