Lookman Shines on Return as Atalanta Defeat Fiorentina 3-2

Nigerian Forward Scores and Assists in Dramatic 3-2 Victory After Transfer Saga

Nigeria forward Ademola Lookman made a triumphant return to Atalanta, scoring a decisive goal and providing an assist in a 3-2 victory over Fiorentina after missing the first three Serie A matches due to a potential transfer to Paris Saint-Germain.

The 26-year-old scored the match-winner in stoppage time at the end of the first half, weaving through Fiorentina’s defense before firing past David de Gea. His goal came just moments after teammate Charles De Ketelaere had equalized with a header. Lookman also set up Mateo Retegui for Atalanta’s first equalizer in the 21st minute with a perfectly placed cross.

“Yeah, I’m happy to be back, in front of our crowd, in front of our fans to be playing football,” Lookman told DAZN after the match.

Lookman’s quick impact was a huge boost for Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini, whose side faces Arsenal on Thursday in the Champions League. Atalanta, who last played in the competition in 2021, recently completed renovations on their Gewiss Stadium and played their first three matches away.

“We deserve [Champions League] and we have to demonstrate that again on Thursday with the same drive and mentality that we showed today,” added Lookman.

The win puts Atalanta eighth in the Serie A standings with six points, while Fiorentina remains winless under new coach Raffaele Palladino, sitting in 14th place.

Elsewhere, Genoa salvaged a 1-1 draw against Roma with Koni De Winter scoring a last-minute equalizer to deny Roma their first win of the season.
