Colombian winger shines in pre-season win over Lyon as German press hail his instant impact
Luis Díaz made an immediate impression in his first appearance for Bayern Munich, earning praise from teammates and the German media after the Colombian played a key role in the Bundesliga giants’ 2-1 pre-season victory over Lyon.
The 28-year-old, who completed a £65.5 million move from Liverpool earlier this month, won the penalty that led to Bayern’s opening goal, drawing a foul from Clinton Mata before Michael Olise converted from the spot. Díaz’s energetic performance on the left flank quickly won over fans and silenced early doubts over his hefty price tag.

“Díaz did a great job today,” said Bayern striker Harry Kane. “We’ve only had a couple of training sessions together, but he seems hungry and lively. You can tell he’s happy to be here—he’s playing with a smile on his face. Today, you saw how dangerous he is in attack, and we’ll need that this season.”
Kane also joked about Díaz’s language skills, saying: “His English isn’t too bad! He communicates well, and with the coach speaking English, he’ll settle in fine. Hopefully, his German improves so the rest of the squad can chat with him too.”
The German media were equally impressed, with BILD declaring: “First win in Díaz’s first game—and the first verdict is clear: The Colombian is a joy to watch. His dynamic runs down the left silenced critics who questioned his €75 million fee.”
Kicker noted similarities to Bayern’s past wing legends, writing: “Díaz brought the same flair as Leroy Sané, constantly threatening with dribbles and shots. Could he and Olise finally be the long-term successors to Robben and Ribéry?”
Meanwhile, Der Spiegel highlighted his near-misses, stating: “Díaz celebrated a strong debut, setting up the opener and going close to scoring himself. Bayern’s new star looks ready to shine.”
Having won four trophies at Liverpool, Díaz has already proven himself at the highest level. If his first outing is any indication, Bayern fans can expect big things from their latest marquee signing.
