PSG Manager Hails French Star as Key to Historic Treble, Calls Him “Exceptional” in Dominant Win Over Inter Milan
Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has thrown his support behind Ousmane Dembélé to claim this year’s Ballon d’Or, following the winger’s electrifying display in Saturday’s Champions League final.
Dembélé played a pivotal role as PSG crushed Inter Milan 5-0 in Munich, securing their first-ever Champions League trophy and completing a historic treble. The 28-year-old French international notched an assist in the final, capping off a sensational season in which he scored 25 goals and emerged as the team’s most dangerous attacking threat.
On the eve of the final, Dembélé was coy when asked if lifting the Champions League would boost his Ballon d’Or chances.
“When you’re a PSG player, the priority is bringing the trophy home for the team,” he said on Friday. “Sure, [the Ballon d’Or] might be in the back of my mind, but it’s not what I’m focused on right now.”
But after the match, Enrique left no doubt about who he believes deserves football’s most prestigious individual honor.
“I would give the Ballon d’Or to Ousmane Dembélé,” the PSG boss declared. “He defended, he attacked, his pressing was outstanding. Without a shadow of a doubt, it should go to him. He was exceptional tonight—incredible. He never let their defense breathe. We controlled the game, and he was a huge part of that.”
With PSG’s historic triumph and Dembélé’s standout performances all season, the race for the Ballon d’Or just got a lot more interesting.
