Luis Suárez Handed Three-Game MLS Ban for Spitting Incident

The Inter Miami star’s controversial past repeats itself as he faces suspension following a moment of “frustration” after the Leagues Cup final defeat.

Major League Soccer has suspended Inter Miami star Luis Suárez for three regular-season games following a spitting incident that marred the end of the Leagues Cup final. The punishment, handed down on Monday, comes after the tournament’s own organizers issued a separate six-game ban for the same incident.

The altercation occurred on August 31st, immediately after Inter Miami’s 3-0 loss to the Seattle Sounders. Cameras captured the 38-year-old Uruguayan striker putting a Seattle player in a headlock, igniting a melee, and later spitting at a Sounders staff member as he walked away.

In a statement posted to Instagram last week, Suárez apologized, calling it a “moment of great tension and frustration” and acknowledging, “I was wrong and I sincerely regret it.” Despite his remorse, the league acted, meaning Suárez will miss crucial matches against Charlotte (Sept. 14), Seattle (Sept. 16), and D.C. United (Sept. 20) as Miami fights for playoff positioning.

The disciplinary actions extended beyond Suárez. The Sounders staff member involved, Steven Lenhart, had his credential rights revoked by MLS for the rest of the season and playoffs. The Seattle club was also fined for credential misappropriation.

This is not the first time Suárez’s fiery temperament has led to a suspension; the legendary striker has previously been banned for biting and racially abusing opponents during his storied career at clubs like Liverpool and Barcelona.
