Real Madrid Legend Set to Become Minority Owner of Swansea City as He Plans for Post-Retirement Future
In a surprising career move, Real Madrid and Croatia legend Luka Modric is set to become a minority owner of Championship side Swansea City—even as he prepares to extend his playing career at the Bernabeu for another season.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the deal, tweeting: “Luka Modric, set to become new Minority Owner at Swansea… deal agreed. This does not affect his pro career, as he wants to continue playing for Real Madrid.”
The 38-year-old midfielder, who has won five Champions League titles with Madrid, is now making early moves into football club ownership. While the exact financial details remain undisclosed, reports from WalesOnline suggest an official announcement could come “within hours.”
Swansea, who last played in the Premier League in 2018, were taken over in December by a U.S.-based consortium led by chairman Andy Coleman. Modric’s connection to the new ownership group is unclear, though he does have past experience playing against the Swans during his Tottenham days in the 2011-12 season.
The move makes Modric the latest high-profile figure to invest in Welsh football, following Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s transformative takeover of Wrexham.
Despite his new venture, Modric remains focused on playing, with Spanish outlet Relevo reporting his desire to stay at Madrid for at least one more year. Meanwhile, Swansea—currently 12th in the Championship—will hope their new high-profile backer can help reignite their push for a Premier League return.
For Modric, it seems the next chapter of his footballing story is already being written—even as he continues to shine on the pitch.
