Red Devils prepare contingency plans as Real Madrid circle for their captain – but Amorim insists ‘he’s not going anywhere
Manchester United have reportedly identified five potential replacements for Bruno Fernandes amid growing fears the club captain could be lured to Real Madrid this summer, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes.
The Red Devils, languishing in 13th place under manager Ruben Amorim, face a crucial rebuild in the coming months. With European qualification unlikely unless they win the Europa League, and financial constraints tightening, the club may need to sell key assets to fund new signings.
Fernandes, 30, has been linked with a £90m move to the Bernabéu, but Amorim has publicly dismissed the speculation. “He’s not going anywhere—I’ve already told him,” the United boss said this week. “It’s not happening. We want Bruno here as we aim to win the league again.”
Yet behind the scenes, United appear to be preparing for all scenarios. Their reported shortlist includes:
- Mikkel Damsgaard (Brentford) – Technically gifted playmaker
- Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace) – Dynamic attacking threat
- Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest) – Versatile midfield presence
- Oscar Gloukh (Red Bull Salzburg) – Intelligent young creator
- Xavi Simons (RB Leipzig) – Highly rated Dutch prospect
Spanish journalist Paco González has cast doubt on Madrid meeting United’s valuation for a 30-year-old, but with the club’s financial struggles well-documented—including recent cost-cutting measures—a major sale cannot be ruled out.
For now, Amorim is adamant Fernandes stays. But if the unthinkable happens, United at least have a plan in place.
