Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move for Raphael Varane this summer and Real Madrid are reportedly willing to let him go to avoid ‘another Ramos case’.
Ramos has just one month left on his current deal with Madrid, meaning he can leave the club as a free agent this summer.
Varane’s contract expires in the summer of 2022, when he too would be available for free should an extension not be agreed.
The Frenchman is said to be a priority for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this summer as he looks to find a long-term partner for Harry Maguire in the heart of United’s defence.
They are said to be willing to offer the 28-year-old a hefty €12million per season to swap Madrid for Manchester.
Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness) claim Madrid’s ‘priority’ is to keep Varane, but the centre-back’s ‘priority’ is to move elsewhere, with Zinedine Zidane’s departure said to be key to that decision.
The report states that Los Blancos don’t want ‘another Ramos case’ when it comes to Varane and they will sell him if he doesn’t accept their offer of an extension.
They will reportedly listen to offers of around €50million from United or other interested parties.
And there are said to be many clubs looking to sign the World Cup winner, with United the ‘most interested’.
Madrid want Varane’s situation resolved sooner rather than later as they will need time to find and sign a suitable replacement.
David Alaba will be joining the club after the European Championships, but should Ramos decide to leave this summer, Madrid will need further defensive reinforcements.
Although the defence is said to be the priority for Solskjaer, but they continue to be linked with Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho.
The Bundesliga club are willing to listen to offers for the England international – who is still keen on a return to the Premier League.
But it’s Groundhog Day. Manchester United have been given a deadline by Dortmund – as they were last summer – to get the deal completed.
