Interim boss, hailed for his “calm demeanor” and connection with players, is said to have convinced the club’s board with wins over City and Arsenal.
Manchester United are poised to hand the permanent manager’s job to interim boss Michael Carrick, according to reports, following his dream start with victories over Manchester City and Arsenal.
Spanish outlet Fichajes claims the club’s board has “already decided” Carrick is their man for next season and beyond, with his “calm demeanor” and “knowledge of the club” as a former player heavily influencing their internal assessment. The report states the dramatic 3-2 win at Arsenal was “a turning point” that cemented their faith, and the club is now considering a contract renewal to make him the long-term project leader.
This apparent shift comes as Carrick has steadied the ship with two monumental wins, lifting United into the Premier League’s top four. The report suggests United are “not looking for a new coach” and value his “ability to connect with players.”
The news aligns with recent analysis from The Athletic’s David Ornstein, who last week outlined how Carrick could “play himself into contention” during a proper hiring process. Ornstein suggested the club should still run a full search, speaking to candidates like Xavi and Thomas Frank, but acknowledged Carrick could emerge as a “proper contender.”
“The confidence of the Red Devils board in Carrick has grown considerably following recent results,” the Fichajes report states, framing the decision as a “real commitment to the future” rather than a temporary fix.
If confirmed, the move would represent a stunning turnaround for Carrick, who initially stepped in on a caretaker basis after Ruben Amorim’s dismissal. The club has yet to make an official announcement, with Carrick’s next test coming at home against Fulham this weekend.
