Spanish Keeper’s Fiorentina Form Has Old Trafford Hierarchy Questioning Past Decision
Manchester United are reportedly exploring a sensational reunion with David de Gea, just 18 months after the veteran goalkeeper’s emotional departure from Old Trafford. The 33-year-old Spaniard – who made over 500 appearances for the club between 2011-2023 – has rebuilt his reputation during an impressive season with Fiorentina, forcing United’s hierarchy to reconsider their previous decision.
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, United’s board have been closely monitoring De Gea’s 30 clean-sheet performances in Italy this campaign. The report suggests club officials now view his abrupt exit as a misstep, particularly as current No.1 Andre Onana continues to face scrutiny following his €55m move from Inter Milan last summer.
A Change of Heart at Old Trafford
De Gea’s United career appeared over when Erik ten Hag opted against renewing his contract in 2023, favoring Onana’s superior distribution over the Spaniard’s shot-stopping prowess. However, the Cameroonian’s inconsistent debut season – coupled with backup Altay Bayindir’s limited opportunities – has prompted a dramatic reassessment behind the scenes.
“Public pressure and United’s desire to rectify their mistake could open the door to negotiations,” claims Fichajes, noting that while Fiorentina hold an option to extend De Gea’s contract, the emotional pull of a United return may prove decisive.
Legends Back the Move
The potential U-turn has drawn support from several club icons. Former striker Dwight Yorke argued last January that re-signing De Gea would be “a really smart move,” while ex-defender Paul Parker recently called the keeper’s departure “a massive mistake.”
“Looking at the backline now, there’s no great pace,” Parker told BettingSites.co.uk. “For me, it’s more important for a goalkeeper to use his hands rather than his feet.”
What Comes Next?
With Fiorentina likely to demand compensation for their star keeper and Onana still adapting to Premier League demands, United face a delicate decision. A return for De Gea would represent both a sentimental homecoming and a pragmatic solution to their goalkeeping concerns – but whether Ten Hag would welcome back a player he previously deemed surplus remains unclear.
As the summer transfer window approaches, one of United’s most decorated modern players may yet write another chapter in his Old Trafford story.
