Man Utd’s Ten Hag Criticizes Southgate After England’s Win Over Serbia

Questions England’s Tactics and Discusses Shaw’s Future

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag didn’t hold back his criticism of England manager Gareth Southgate following the Three Lions’ 1-0 victory over Serbia on Sunday night.

During the first half of the Euro 2024 Group C opener in Gelsenkirchen, England appeared to be in control, taking a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to a header from Jude Bellingham. However, Serbia tested England’s resolve throughout the second half, challenging their control of the game.

Despite the pressure, England managed to secure the three points. They could have extended their lead if Harry Kane had converted a superb cross from Jarrod Bowen late in the game.

Ten Hag, who was providing commentary for NOS in the Netherlands, criticized Southgate’s tactics after the match. Southgate, previously linked with a potential move to Old Trafford, faced scrutiny from Ten Hag.

“It’s the vision of the manager [Southgate],” Ten Hag said. “England takes a 1-0 lead, then he [Southgate] decides to start playing defensively, relying on moments for the rest of the game.”

Ten Hag also spoke about Luke Shaw, who has had an injury-ridden season but made Southgate’s England squad due to a lack of options at left-back. “Luke Shaw will start playing once England get out of the group stages,” Ten Hag revealed.

After a challenging Premier League season that saw Manchester United finish eighth, Ten Hag kept his job by winning the FA Cup. Discussing INEOS’ decision to retain him, Ten Hag said, “It was a turbulent season. I took a bit of a holiday. This week, United suddenly showed up and said they would like to continue with me.”

He added, “In any organization, it’s wise to evaluate and draw conclusions. The new leadership at Manchester United decided to continue with me.”

Reports indicated that Manchester United had considered several potential candidates before sticking with Ten Hag. Addressing these talks, Ten Hag said, “Everyone has heard they spoke to several candidates. In the Netherlands, that’s not possible and not allowed while there’s a current head coach. In England, it’s different. Manchester United told me they spoke with [Thomas] Tuchel, but eventually concluded that they already have the best manager.”

When asked about his contract situation, Ten Hag responded, “We’ve spoken well and discussed various topics. The conclusion is that we will sit down to extend the contract. We still have to reach an agreement, which won’t be easy. Let’s talk about it some more.”
