Uruguayan Winger Impresses with Performances and Expresses Desire to Play Under Guardiola
Manchester City appear to be in pole position to secure the services of Sporting CP’s rising star Maxi Araujo, edging out Manchester United despite connections between Sporting players and United boss Ruben Amorim.
Araujo’s Emergence at Sporting CP
The 24-year-old Uruguayan, who can operate across the left flank, joined Sporting CP from Liga MX side Puebla in August 2024 for €13.6 million. Since then, Araujo has showcased his versatility and attacking prowess, scoring three goals and providing one assist in 14 appearances, mostly as a left winger or midfielder.
Araujo’s profile received a significant boost during Sporting’s 4-1 triumph over Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League. While Viktor Gyokeres stole the headlines with a hat-trick, Araujo impressed with a composed left-footed finish that further underlined his potential.
Dreaming of Manchester City
The young winger has expressed admiration for City manager Pep Guardiola, even requesting a photo with the iconic coach after their Champions League encounter. Speaking about his ambitions, Araujo shared that he hopes to one day play under Guardiola.
Eduardo Espinel, a key figure in Araujo’s early development in Uruguay, believes the player is destined for success at the highest level. “He’s faster, more tactically aware, and stronger than ever. I have no doubt he’s capable of thriving at a top club like Manchester City,” Espinel told Portuguese outlet O Jogo.
Espinel added that Araujo’s skills—speed, one-on-one ability, and tactical intelligence—are highly sought after by elite teams and suggested the winger will continue to attract interest as he adapts further to European football.
Competition from Manchester United
Manchester United are also monitoring Araujo, with several Sporting players, including Viktor Gyokeres and Gonçalo Inácio, reportedly interested in reuniting with former coach Ruben Amorim. However, Araujo’s limited time under Amorim before his move to Manchester United weakens the connection between the two, giving City the upper hand.
Grealish’s Uncertain Future at City
City’s interest in Araujo coincides with uncertainty surrounding Jack Grealish’s future. The England international has reportedly grown frustrated with Guardiola’s rotation policy, and Tottenham Hotspur are said to be considering a potential move for the winger.
What’s Next for Araujo?
As interest in Araujo heats up, his performances will be closely watched in the coming months. If his development continues on its current trajectory, the 19-cap Uruguayan international could find himself on the move, with City emerging as his most likely destination.
For now, Araujo remains a key player for Sporting CP, helping them compete domestically and in Europe, while his growing reputation ensures his future will remain a hot topic in the footballing world.
