Dominic Solanke’s Improvised “Scorpion Kick” Completes Dramatic 2-2 Draw After City Let Two-Goal Lead Slip
Manchester City’s Premier League title charge was jolted on Saturday, not by a defeat, but by a collapse. The visitors let a commanding two-goal halftime lead evaporate at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, forced to settle for a 2-2 draw by a resurgent Spurs side led by the inspired Dominic Solanke.
The first half belonged entirely to City. They sliced through a sluggish Tottenham at will, taking the lead after just 11 minutes. Rayan Cherki strolled unimpeded into the box and finished coolly past goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. The pressure told again just before the break, as Antoine Semenyo—a familiar thorn in Spurs’ side this season—doubled the advantage, sending the hosts into the tunnel to a chorus of boos.
Any expectation of a Tottenham response after the restart seemed remote. What followed, however, was a breathtaking transformation. Spurred into life, Spurs flew at City from the whistle.
The comeback began in the 53rd minute. Solanke, anonymous in the first half, muscled between two defenders and squeezed a shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma to ignite the crowd. Then, with 20 minutes to play, he produced a moment of pure, instinctive genius. Meeting Conor Gallagher’s cross, Solanke flung himself forward and, with his back to goal, guided the ball over the stunned Donnarumma with an audacious diving “scorpion kick.”
The stadium erupted. Solanke, from zero to hero, had dragged his team level with a goal that will be replayed for years.
A frantic finale saw both teams hunt a winner. City substitute Tijjani Reijnders missed with two headers, while Spurs’ Xavi Simons was denied by a superb Donnarumma save. When the final whistle blew, it was the men in white who celebrated a hard-earned point snatched from the jaws of defeat.
For City, the draw feels like a loss, their grip on the title race loosened by a failure to close out a game they had dominated. For Tottenham and their fans, it was a thrilling testament to a never-say-die spirit, authored by a striker who turned the game on its head with a flick of his heel.
