Premier League Champions Eye Next-Generation Defenders Amid Aging Backline
Manchester City have set their sights on Brazilian teenager Vitor Reis as they prepare to reshape their defense for the future. The Premier League champions are reportedly eager to secure the 18-year-old center-back from Palmeiras, who value the promising talent at €40 million.
Immediate Plans for Reis
City intend for Reis to join their first team immediately rather than going out on loan if the deal is finalized in January. The Brazilian U-17 international made a name for himself last season, breaking into Palmeiras’ senior squad. His current club is expected to compete in the Club World Cup this summer, a stage where Reis has the chance to further showcase his potential.
Broader Defensive Revamp
Reis is not City’s only defensive target. The club is also pursuing 20-year-old Uzbekistan international Abdukodir Khusanov, currently playing for French side Lens. These moves reflect manager Pep Guardiola’s focus on rejuvenating an aging defense.
City’s recent acquisitions in defense—Josko Gvardiol and Manuel Akanji—are the only ones signed in the last four years. With veteran right-back Kyle Walker turning 35 in May and key center-backs John Stones, Nathan Aké, and Akanji approaching their 30s, the club is clearly planning for the next generation.
Additional Transfer Interests
Beyond defensive reinforcements, Manchester City are also exploring attacking options, reportedly targeting Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush.
A Busy January Window?
As Guardiola looks to address injury woes and build a squad for sustained success, City’s January transfer activity could be pivotal. If signed, Vitor Reis would symbolize a step toward the future while maintaining the high standards expected at the Etihad Stadium.
