Red Devils Shift Focus to Alternative Targets After Losing Out on Coveted Sporting Lisbon Star
Manchester United have reluctantly withdrawn from the race to sign Viktor Gyokeres after concluding the Swedish striker has set his sights on joining Arsenal this summer, FootballInsider can reveal.
The 26-year-old goal machine had been high on United’s wishlist following a sensational season at Sporting Lisbon, where he netted an astonishing 54 goals in 52 appearances across all competitions. However, sources close to the negotiations confirm Gyokeres showed little enthusiasm about joining a United side that finished outside European qualification spots last season.
Former United chief scout Mick Brown told FootballInsider: “The club made efforts to persuade him, but it’s clear his preference is Arsenal. United have now moved on to other options.” Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta has emerged as a potential alternative target for the Old Trafford hierarchy.
The transfer saga has taken dramatic turns in recent days, with Gyokeres’ representatives accusing Sporting Lisbon of reneging on a purported agreement to sell him for under €70 million. Portuguese outlet Record has obtained an explosive voice note allegedly featuring Manchester City sporting director Hugo Viana – formerly of Sporting – agreeing to a €60 million base fee plus €10 million in bonuses.
Arsenal, while keen to secure Gyokeres’ services, have grown frustrated with the escalating demands from Sporting. The North London club have been forced to consider contingency plans, with RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko identified as an alternative should negotiations for Gyokeres collapse.
The prolific striker has reportedly expressed his displeasure to Sporting’s hierarchy about the protracted transfer situation. Having delivered back-to-back stellar seasons – including 43 goals last campaign – Gyokeres has established himself as one of Europe’s most sought-after forwards.
As the summer transfer window heats up, all eyes remain on whether Arsenal can break the deadlock with Sporting or if they’ll turn their attention to Sesko, while United continue their search for attacking reinforcements elsewhere.
