Red Devils refuse to meet Seagulls’ sky-high demands as midfield search takes new turn.
Manchester United have ended their interest in Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba after failing to bridge a massive gap in valuation, The Athletic reports.
The 21-year-old had emerged as a key target for United in recent weeks, with initial discussions held through intermediaries before direct negotiations between the clubs took place. However, Brighton made it clear they have no intention of selling their rising star—unless a British-record fee close to £115m, matching Chelsea’s purchase of Moisés Caicedo, was tabled.
United, unwilling to stretch their budget that far this summer, have now walked away from the deal. While Baleba was reportedly open to a move to Old Trafford and personal terms were not an issue, the Cameroonian midfielder remains content at Brighton, and United have opted not to push further out of respect for the Seagulls’ firm stance.
So far this window, the Red Devils have splashed nearly £200m on attacking reinforcements, including Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Šeško. With financial discipline a priority, club officials are now shifting focus to offloading players before considering any additional signings.
The collapse of the Baleba deal leaves Erik ten Hag’s side exploring alternative midfield options as they aim to balance ambition with fiscal responsibility.
