Manchester United Addresses Potential Europa League Ban

Club Seeks Clarity Over UEFA Ownership Rules

Manchester United has responded to concerns that they could be banned from next season’s Europa League, despite qualifying for it. The issue arises because Nice, who are also owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS (holding a majority stake in Nice and a minority stake in United), have also qualified for the tournament by finishing fifth in Ligue 1.

UEFA regulations state that two clubs controlled by the same entity cannot compete in the same UEFA competition. This rule typically affects the team that finishes lower in their league, which would be United in this scenario. However, since United secured their Europa League spot by winning the FA Cup, there is some uncertainty regarding the rule’s application.

INEOS has sought to clarify the situation with a statement as reported by The Daily Mail: “We are aware of the position of the two clubs and we are in direct dialogue with UEFA. We are convinced that we have a solution for next season in Europe.”

One potential solution under UEFA’s relaxed rules could be for one of the teams to drop down to the Europa Conference League if needed. However, United remains confident that an agreement with UEFA will allow both clubs to compete in the Europa League next season.
