Manchester United Announce First Post-Season Asia Tour Amid Growing Fixture Congestion Concerns

Red Devils to Play in Malaysia and Hong Kong Days After Premier League Finale as Club Seeks “Significant Revenue” Boost

Manchester United will embark on their first-ever post-season tour to Asia this May, with back-to-back friendlies in Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong scheduled just days after their Premier League campaign concludes.

The club confirmed the whirlwind trip—featuring a May 28 match against an ASEAN All Stars team in Malaysia followed by a May 30 clash in Hong Kong—comes as part of CEO Omar Berrada’s strategy to “drive significant additional revenue” for the financially-struggling giants. The announcement arrives alongside news of further staff redundancies and five consecutive years of losses for the Red Devils.

While United framed the tour as a chance to “connect directly with fans in Asia,” the tight scheduling raises fresh questions about player workload. The squad could face just four days’ rest after a potential Europa League final (May 21) and their Premier League finale against Aston Villa (May 25)—before flying 7,000 miles for exhibition matches.

The tour precedes United’s already-confirmed U.S. Summer Series in July, meaning players may have just three weeks off this summer. Last year’s post-season friendlies in Australia by Newcastle and Tottenham drew criticism for prioritizing commercial gains over athlete welfare—a tension United now navigates as they balance financial pressures with sporting demands.

As Berrada noted, these tours “help make the club stronger.” But with fatigue mounting across football’s packed calendar, some will ask: at what cost?
