Emotional Departures Mark New Era Under Amorim as Academy Graduates Also Move On
Manchester United have confirmed an emotional changing of the guard, with Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelöf among the senior players departing as their contracts expire this summer. The club also announced the release of six academy prospects, while veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton could remain as a dressing-room mentor.
Lindelöf, 29, leaves after eight seasons and 284 appearances, having been a consistent presence during turbulent times at Old Trafford. The Swedish defender lifted both the League Cup and FA Cup during his tenure, but his final act was the heartbreak of May’s Europa League final defeat.

Eriksen’s United journey – which began with his remarkable comeback from cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 – concludes with a fairytale final act: scoring in his last appearance against Aston Villa. The Danish playmaker’s 108-game stint bridged two eras, his creativity and resilience embodying the club’s spirit.
For Evans, 37, retirement beckons after completing a career circle that saw him return to his boyhood club last year. The Northern Irishman, who won three Premier League titles in his first United spell, adds an FA Cup medal to his collection before hanging up his boots.
“These players have given everything for the badge,” a club insider told The Athletic. “Their professionalism during transition periods has been invaluable.”
While Heaton may stay as a player-coach influence, six academy graduates – including goalkeepers Hubert Graczyk and Tom Wooster – will seek opportunities elsewhere. United have pledged lifelong support through their alumni program, emphasizing that development pathways don’t always lead to first-team football.
As new manager Rúben Amorim reshapes his squad, these departures mark both an ending and new beginnings – with the Portuguese coach reportedly keen to retain Heaton’s experience during this transitional phase. For those moving on, their United legacy remains intact; for the club, another rebuild begins.
