Manchester United Close In on Sporting CP Starlet Geovany Quenda- Journalist Ben Jacobs

Red Devils Secure Verbal Agreement with Versatile Teenager Amid Season Struggles

Manchester United are making moves to bolster their squad for the future, with reports indicating that Sporting CP’s highly-rated youngster Geovany Quenda has “verbally agreed” to join the club this summer. The 17-year-old, who can play multiple positions, is seen as a key target for United boss Ruben Amorim as the club looks to rebuild after a disappointing season.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Quenda has agreed to personal terms with the Red Devils, and the club is now working to negotiate a fee with Sporting CP. The Portuguese side is reportedly holding out for around €60 million (£50 million), while United hopes to secure the deal for closer to €40 million (£33.1 million). Quenda’s release clause is set at €100 million (£85 million), but United is optimistic about reaching a compromise.

Jacobs, speaking on talkSPORT , highlighted Quenda’s potential, describing him as a “quick, intelligent, and creative” player with excellent movement off the ball. “He can play deeper as a right wing-back, on the right wing, and while his goal output will improve with age, he’s already very intuitive,” Jacobs said. “Ruben Amorim knows him really well and values that kind of player.”

The move comes as Manchester United endure a turbulent season, sitting 15th in the Premier League after a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham. Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag in November, has struggled to turn things around, winning just four of his 14 league matches in charge. Despite the poor results, the Portuguese manager has remained committed to his high-intensity philosophy, and the club’s hierarchy, led by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, is determined to back him with the right signings.

Quenda, who has impressed in Sporting’s youth setup, is seen as a player who can adapt to Amorim’s system and grow into a key role at Old Trafford. Sporting youth coach Bernardo Bruschy recently acknowledged the teenager’s potential, telling A Bola, “Seeing his name associated with clubs of the biggest size in Europe surprises me just because it is so early, but I am not surprised if he gets there.”

The January transfer window saw United limited by the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), with Patrick Dorgu from Lecce being their only signing. However, the club is now looking ahead to the summer, with Quenda emerging as a top priority.

If United can finalize the deal, it would represent a significant step in their rebuilding process. Quenda’s versatility, creativity, and potential make him an exciting prospect for the future, and his arrival could provide a much-needed boost to a squad in desperate need of fresh talent.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on United’s efforts to secure Quenda’s signature and lay the groundwork for a brighter future under Amorim’s leadership. For now, fans can dare to dream of what the young starlet could bring to the Theatre of Dreams.
