Sporting CP’s Title-Winning Manager Signs Three-Year Deal to Revive Old Trafford
Manchester United has officially named Ruben Amorim as the club’s new head coach, with the 39-year-old set to take the reins at Old Trafford on November 11. The announcement follows confirmation from Sporting CP last week that United agreed to pay a compensation fee, reduced from Amorim’s original €20 million release clause under a unique “pact” that allows him to join a top European club for around half that amount.
The search for a new manager began after United’s part-owners, Ineos, dismissed Erik ten Hag on October 28 following a challenging start to the season.
United currently sit 14th in the Premier League with just 11 points, eight goals, and a goal difference of -3 after nine games. Ten Hag’s departure left Ruud van Nistelrooy, United legend and assistant coach, in temporary charge.
Amorim has signed a three-year contract with the option of an additional season and will reportedly earn €7.8 million per year. Sporting disclosed the exact compensation for his departure, which totals €11 million, with €10 million allocated for Amorim and €1 million for his support staff. The Portuguese club also confirmed an additional financial benefit of €1.7 million related to contract renegotiations.
Amorim joins United with a proven record, having brought Sporting CP two Portuguese league titles and ending the club’s 19-year wait for a Primeira Liga championship. He also won two League Cups and the Portuguese Supercup in 2021. Admired in Lisbon for his achievements, Amorim has long expressed interest in the Premier League, having previously engaged in talks with West Ham.
Amorim’s appointment marks him as the sixth permanent head coach since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, and he arrives with high expectations from fans and club officials alike. With his success in Portugal and ambition for English football, many are hopeful he can finally bring stability and success back to Manchester United.
