Manchester United Considers Ticket Price Hikes Amid Financial Struggles

Club says action is necessary to address “significant losses” and maintain competitiveness.

Manchester United has acknowledged the possibility of ticket price increases for next season as part of efforts to reduce “significant losses” and comply with Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations. The club outlined its position in a letter to fan groups, The 1958 and Fan Coalition 58, who had expressed concerns over the potential impact on the fanbase.

The letter emphasized the club’s appreciation for its loyal supporters while underscoring the urgent need to address its financial challenges.

“We agree that our fans are what makes Manchester United the greatest football club in the world,” the letter read. “We greatly value and appreciate the loyalty and passion our fans have for the club, and the difference this makes to the team.”

However, the letter pointed out that Manchester United has incurred over £300 million in losses over the past three years, a situation the club described as unsustainable. In September, it was reported that total losses had reached £370 million over five years.

“This is not sustainable, and if we do not act now, we are in danger of failing to comply with FFP requirements in future years and significantly impacting our ability to compete on the pitch,” the statement continued.

In November, the club increased members’ ticket prices to £66 and removed concessions for children and pensioners. While acknowledging the concerns of fans, United defended its focus on restoring financial stability as a foundation for future success.

“We will get back to a cash-positive position as soon as possible and will have to make some difficult choices to get there,” the letter stated. “This has included workforce reductions and cuts across many areas of spending at the club.”

The club assured fans that ticketing strategies would undergo formal consultation with the Fans’ Advisory Board (FAB).

“We do not expect fans to make up all the current shortfall – but we do need to look at our ticketing strategy to ensure we are charging the right amount and offering the right discounts across our products for our fans,” the letter explained.

The FAB’s role will be advisory, helping shape proposals that will ultimately be decided by the club’s ownership group. Manchester United also clarified that no final decisions have been made regarding ticket pricing for the 2025/26 season.

“Once we have an approved strategy and pricing policy, we will communicate the details to all fans,” the letter concluded. “Until we have an outcome, we will not be commenting further on what may or may not change for next season.”

The communication highlights the delicate balance the club faces in addressing its financial woes while maintaining affordability and accessibility for its fanbase.
