Cameroonian Forward Chooses Old Trafford Over Spurs as Medical Looms
Manchester United’s pursuit of Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo has reached a breakthrough after the Bees finally accepted a third bid worth up to £71 million for their prolific forward.
The Red Devils saw two earlier offers—£45 million and £55 million—swiftly rejected, but their latest proposal of £65 million paid in four installments, plus £6 million in add-ons, has convinced Brentford to greenlight the transfer. Personal terms between Mbeumo and United were already agreed, meaning the 25-year-old could complete his move in the coming days pending a medical.
Despite interest from Tottenham—who recently appointed former Brentford boss Thomas Frank—Mbeumo made it clear that his preference was a switch to Old Trafford, even though United will miss out on European football this season while Spurs return to the Champions League. The Cameroonian international remained professional throughout negotiations, continuing pre-season training with Brentford as the deal progressed.
Mbeumo was instrumental for the Bees last season, netting 20 goals and providing eight assists while featuring in every Premier League game. Since joining from French side Troyes in 2019, he played a key role in Brentford’s rise from the Championship, making him one of their most prized assets.
United’s recruitment team pushed hard for the deal after seeing their initial bids fall short of Brentford’s valuation, which was influenced by the £60 million+ fee they paid Wolves for Matheus Cunha earlier in the window. The move signals Erik ten Hag’s intent to revamp his attack, with several forwards—including Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, and Antony—reportedly allowed to seek new clubs.
Mbeumo could join United’s pre-season tour of the U.S., where they face West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton before returning for a final friendly against Fiorentina. His arrival would provide a much-needed boost to a squad looking to rebound from last season’s disappointing campaign.
For Brentford, the hefty fee represents a significant return on their investment, but replacing Mbeumo’s goals and creativity will be a major challenge as they prepare for life without their star man.
