Rashford’s Future Hangs in the Balance Amid Napoli and England Considerations
Manchester United are reportedly considering a sensational swap deal involving Marcus Rashford and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen as the January transfer window heats up. The proposed move is part of United’s efforts to bolster head coach Ruben Amorim’s attacking options while navigating the challenges of player form and financial regulations.
Rashford, once a pivotal figure at Old Trafford, has seen his role diminished under Amorim, being dropped from four consecutive matchday squads before making the bench during United’s 2-0 loss to Newcastle. Despite his reduced role, Rashford remains the Red Devils’ joint-top scorer in the Premier League with four goals, surprising many of his teammates with his exclusion.
According to The Sun, Rashford is open to a move but has specific conditions. He has rejected lucrative offers from the Saudi Pro League, which would have surpassed his current £315,000-a-week contract, as well as approaches from Turkey. The 26-year-old forward is determined to join a competitive league that offers him a pathway back into the England squad.
United, keen to strengthen their attacking line that has produced just 21 goals in 19 Premier League games, are exploring a deal for Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian striker, currently on loan at Galatasaray, has a release clause of £62 million in his Napoli contract. Osimhen has been prolific this season, netting 12 goals in 15 matches for Galatasaray, including a brace against Tottenham in the Europa League.
Osimhen’s record speaks for itself: he scored 26 league goals during Napoli’s title-winning 2022-23 season and has amassed 76 goals in 133 appearances for the Italian side. Napoli manager Antonio Conte is reportedly intrigued by the possibility of bringing Rashford to Serie A, where he would join former United teammates Romelu Lukaku and Scott McTominay.
United’s willingness to part with Rashford stems from a need to comply with profit and sustainability regulations. The club is open to offers for the England international, including potential loan arrangements, provided the acquiring team covers a substantial portion of his wages.
While Rashford has expressed openness to remaining at United—where he is contracted until June 2028—his exclusion from recent squads and the lure of new challenges make his future uncertain. For now, a potential swap with Osimhen presents a compelling opportunity for both clubs to address their needs.
As the January window unfolds, all eyes will be on United, Napoli, and Rashford to see if this high-profile deal materializes.
