Red Devils Face Uphill Battle to Land Top Striker Target Amid Champions League Hurdle
Manchester United’s search for a new striker has taken an unexpected turn, with Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta emerging as a potential target for the summer transfer window. The move comes as the Red Devils face growing uncertainty over their ability to secure their primary target, Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres.
According to The Sun, United have been monitoring Mateta, who has been in impressive form for Palace this season. The French forward has caught the attention of Old Trafford officials as they look to address their ongoing struggles in front of goal. Manager Ruben Amorim recently admitted his side’s scoring woes following their FA Cup penalty shootout defeat to Fulham, emphasizing the need for reinforcements up front.
“Manchester United are monitoring Jean-Philippe Mateta and could make a shock summer swoop for the Crystal Palace striker,” the report states. “In-form French frontman Mateta has emerged as a major target for the goal-shy Red Devils.”
While Gyokeres, Amorim’s former striker at Sporting Lisbon, remains United’s top priority, the Swedish international’s desire to join a Champions League club has complicated matters. Despite Gyokeres reportedly being open to reuniting with Amorim, United’s current position outside the Premier League’s top four makes a move to Old Trafford unlikely.
“Top of the list is Sweden’s Viktor Gyokeres,” the report adds. “But despite Gyokeres being keen on the idea of a reunion with Amorim, he’s pushing for a move to a Champions League club, which would make a switch to United a total non-starter.”
With securing a proven goalscorer now a top priority, United’s recruitment team is exploring alternative options. Mateta, who has shown his ability to deliver in the Premier League, could provide a more attainable solution to their attacking woes.
As the summer transfer window approaches, United fans will be watching closely to see how the club navigates its striker search. Whether it’s Mateta or another target, the Red Devils know they must act decisively to solve their goal-scoring crisis and compete at the highest level next season.
