Manchester United Eye Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim as Potential Successor to Erik ten Hag

Red Devils make early moves in race for Pep Guardiola’s successor at Manchester City.

Manchester United have reportedly made contact with Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag, amid speculation that Amorim could also succeed Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. According to Sky Germany, United are looking to secure Amorim ahead of their city rivals, preparing for a possible managerial change while still publicly backing Ten Hag.

The interest in Amorim, 39, comes as Ten Hag faces increasing pressure after overseeing United’s worst-ever start to a Premier League season. Although the club remains supportive of Ten Hag for now, United are exploring future options and have already inquired about Amorim’s situation at Sporting.

Florian Plettenberg reported on social media: “Ruben Amorim is not only on the list at Manchester City as a possible replacement for Pep Guardiola, but Manchester United in particular are also interested in him. United have made specific inquiries but still trust Ten Hag for the time being.”

Amorim, who has gained a strong reputation for his work at Sporting CP, has ambitions to stay with the Portuguese side through the current season. His contract runs until 2026, but it includes a release clause that could come into play next summer, creating an opportunity for either Manchester club to make their move.

The battle for Amorim could intensify depending on Guardiola’s future at City. While Guardiola has hinted at a possible departure, City are reportedly planning a new contract offer for the Spaniard. Additionally, City have a strategic advantage with Sporting’s sporting director, Hugo Viana, set to join City in the summer, further strengthening the Premier League champions’ ties to Amorim.

If Guardiola stays, United may have a clearer path to securing Amorim’s signature next summer. But if City are in the race, the two Manchester clubs could find themselves in a head-to-head competition for one of Europe’s most promising young managers.
