Manchester United’s pursuit of a new striker has taken a fresh turn, with Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres emerging as a key target for the summer transfer window. The Swedish forward, who has been in sensational form this season, scoring 33 goals for Sporting, is now firmly on United’s radar as they look to bolster their attacking options.
The Red Devils were notably quiet in the January transfer window, failing to secure a new striker despite being linked with several high-profile names. One such target was Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel, but the 19-year-old opted for a loan move to Tottenham Hotspur instead. With their January plans falling short, United have turned their attention to Gyokeres, who has been a standout performer in Portugal this campaign.
Reports suggest that United considered making a move for Gyokeres in January but were deterred by Sporting’s insistence on his £83 million release clause. The hefty price tag proved too steep for the Premier League giants, who are carefully navigating financial constraints. However, there is optimism for a summer deal, as Sporting are reportedly willing to lower their asking price to around £60 million.
The potential transfer has added intrigue due to Gyokeres’ connection with Ruben Amorim, his former manager at Sporting, who has been linked with the United coaching job. According to The Sun, Gyokeres has already expressed a desire to reunite with Amorim at Old Trafford, giving United an edge in the race for his signature.

Currently, United’s striking options are limited to Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, following the loan departures of Marcus Rashford and Antony. With Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho as the only recognized senior wide forwards, the need for reinforcements is clear.
