Marcus Rashford’s Dream Move to Barcelona Hinges on United Subsidizing His Wages
Manchester United are set to shoulder a significant portion of Marcus Rashford’s salary to facilitate his departure this summer, as the club grapples with the financial burden of their high-earning squad. According to The Daily Telegraph, United’s inflated wage bill is making it increasingly difficult to find clubs willing to match their players’ current pay packages.
Rashford, who earns a staggering €18 million per year at Old Trafford, is among several players proving hard to move on. Fellow stars Mason Mount (€15m) and Andre Onana (€7m) are also stuck in limbo, while even younger talents like Alejandro Garnacho—on a relatively modest €3m—are attracting limited interest.
Barcelona Looms as Rashford’s Preferred Destination
The England international is reportedly eager to join Barcelona this summer, despite the Catalan giants already securing Athletic Club’s Nico Williams for the left wing. Barça president Joan Laporta has openly expressed interest in Rashford, and reports suggest the club has tabled a loan offer with an option to buy.
However, given United’s financial constraints, they may have no choice but to subsidize Rashford’s wages to make the deal viable—a scenario they have faced before with departing players.
A Turbulent Season Leads to Exit
Rashford’s time at United appears to be over after a tumultuous campaign. Following a controversial interview with The Times in December—where he hinted at seeking a “new challenge”—he was briefly exiled from the squad before joining Aston Villa on loan in January.
Though he showed flashes of his old self at Villa Park, contributing two goals and four assists, the Midlands club opted against triggering the €47.5 million permanent clause. Now back at United, the 27-year-old is officially on the market, marking the end of a 14-year association with the Red Devils.
A Legacy at Old Trafford
Rashford leaves behind a mixed legacy, having made 426 appearances and scored 138 goals for United since his debut in 2016. His contributions on and off the pitch, including his impactful campaigning for child food poverty, endeared him to fans. However, his recent struggles for form and consistency have led to an inevitable parting of ways.
With just 62 England caps and 17 international goals to his name, Rashford will hope a fresh start—potentially at Barcelona—can reignite his career. For United, the focus now shifts to restructuring a bloated wage bill as they navigate a pivotal summer rebuild.
