Manchester United Face Goalkeeping Dilemma in Pursuit of Donnarumma

PSG’s Star Keeper Available, But Red Devils Must Solve Squad Puzzle First

Manchester United have been presented with a tantalizing opportunity to sign Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer—but turning that possibility into reality is proving far from straightforward.

The 25-year-old PSG shot-stopper, now entering the final year of his contract, has emerged as a potential target for United as the French champions prepare for life without him. With contract talks stalling in Paris and Lille’s Lucas Chevalier lined up as his replacement, Donnarumma could be available. However, United’s own goalkeeping logjam is complicating matters.

The club had hoped to offload Andre Onana to make room for a new No. 1, but a lack of serious interest has left them stuck. Earlier this summer, United ruled out the idea of carrying two high-earning first-choice goalkeepers, and reversing that stance now would require a major shift in strategy. Backup keeper Altay Bayindir was also expected to attract offers, but the Turkish international has seen little movement in the market.

With financial constraints limiting their options, United are now exploring alternative solutions—including a possible loan move. Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez has been discussed as a short-term fix, providing competition for Onana while keeping long-term plans flexible.

Donnarumma’s arrival would undoubtedly excite fans, but for now, the deal remains more of a dream than a concrete possibility. United must first untangle their goalkeeping situation before they can seriously consider bringing the Euro 2020 winner to Old Trafford.
