Manchester United Look to Secure Maguire’s Future Amid Saudi Interest

New manager Ruben Amorim identifies the defender as a key figure, aiming to prevent a free transfer next summer.

Manchester United are set to open talks with defender Harry Maguire over a new long-term contract, as new manager Ruben Amorim is keen to retain him.

The club’s move is motivated by concerns over the 32-year-old leaving on a free transfer when his current deal expires in 2026. According to reports, Maguire would be open to a departure next year. This comes as two Saudi Pro League clubs are reportedly weighing up a late bid for the defender before their summer window shuts on 23 September. However, it is believed Maguire would only consider a move to the Middle East next summer.

In a recent development, reports now claim that Maguire has performed an “immediate u-turn” and is “determined” to continue playing for Man Utd. Amorim wants the player to be part of the “backbone” of his first-team squad, and there is increasing optimism that a new contract will be signed.

Maguire made 40 appearances last season but has yet to start a Premier League game this term, coming off the bench against Arsenal and Fulham.

In other squad news, the club could be set to offload goalkeeper Andre Onana. The Cameroonian has lost his starting place to Altay Bayindir, and the arrival of Senne Lammens has made him third choice. A late move to the Saudi Pro League is now on the cards.
