Manchester United Passed on Chelsea’s Lavia Swap for Garnacho

Red Devils reportedly declined a surprising offer due to concerns over the midfielder’s fitness, despite a recognized need in his position.

In a revealing twist from the recent transfer window, Manchester United turned down a notable proposal from Chelsea that would have seen midfielder Romeo Lavia move to Old Trafford in exchange for young star Alejandro Garnacho, according to a report from the Daily Mail.

Chelsea ultimately secured the signing of Garnacho for a fee of £40 million. However, prior to that deal, the Blues were reportedly open to including the 21-year-old Lavia as part of a swap to lure the promising winger to Stamford Bridge.

The offer, however, was swiftly rebuffed by United. Club officials are said to have been hesitant due to significant concerns over Lavia’s fitness record. This decision came despite United’s own recruitment team openly acknowledging a desire to strengthen their central midfield during the summer.

The knock-on effect of this choice is now visible on the pitch. With no new midfielder arriving, captain Bruno Fernandes has been shifted back from his preferred advanced role to operate in a deeper position alongside Casemiro.

The reasoning behind United’s caution appears validated by Lavia’s difficult start to life in London. His time at Chelsea has been almost entirely blighted by injuries, preventing him from making a meaningful impact since his arrival.
